Hill Superb in the Midsummer Sun

The Midsummer Open

Brooks Cycles/Velodrome.org.uk rider Steve Hill dominated proceedings at the Midsummer Open in Newcastle today, and walked away with the title he has craved for so many years, Midsummer Sprinters League Champion

Since the age of Nine Hilly has been a regular at Lyme Valley Stadium and locals have seen him rise through the ranks and into the Olympic Development Programme and today he repaid the NTCA for all their support with an emotional victory on home soil

Steve topped the 200m TT with a time of 11.12s, pushing former British Team member Matt Haynes (11.19s) down into second place, with Hill's fellow ODP member Pete Mitchell third with 11.38s

In Round One, Hill faced Cardiff CC's Michael Partridge, who won last year's Sprinters League event at Scunthorpe track and is a strong contender for a place in the Welsh squad for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and Halesowen's Andrew Tranter

Steve led from the front and effortlessly turned on the gas to win by a comfortable margin and progress through to the next round, as did Haynes who beat Kian Emadi and Gywn Carless.

Pete Mitchell however, was forced into the repechage by David Alonso Castillo of Spain, who is the inaurgral rider in Velodrome.org.uk's partnership with Spanish Cycling, which involves bringing promising young Spaniards to Britain to gain racing experience in the best possible environment, the British Track Cycling scene

Mitchell and Partridge fought their way back through the repechage, but neither were able to progress to the final as Hill again sent a message to British Cycling as he easily beat Pete and Kevin Stewart to make the final, whereas Haynes beat Alonso and Partridge to set up a mouthwatering final which after an early track stand Hill controlled from the front to win in style

In the Velodrome.org.uk Sprint Championship's 27 riders did battle with Callum Skinner of Edinburgh Racers beating last week's Midland Sprint Series hero Lee Povey and Welsh rider Rhydian Page in the final

John McClelland produced a strong sprint finish to take the honours in the 20km Scratch race from Martin Freeman and Kian Emadi
