Rotherham Impresses Again

The latest round of the Brooks Cycles Track League at the Lyme Valley Stadium, Newcastle, Staffs saw another great nights racing under warm blue skies.

The next round of the season long Keirin League saw six riders fight their way through the qualifying heats to the final. As the Derny pulled off with 400m to go former World Masters Champion Steve Cronshaw launched an impressive attack which saw him gain a 10 metres lead on his rivals. With 20m to go it looked as though Steve was going to hold on for the victory however Matthew Rotherham of Sportcity Velo pulled back the lead and took the lead as he entered the home straight to go on to win the event. Declan Byrne of Brooks Cycles came second from a fast finishing Robert Lambton also of Brooks Cycles.

The final 10 mile scratch event saw the B Class riders hold on gainfully to their 2 ½ lap advantage until 8 laps to go whereby Sam Lowe tried to repeat his move of last week with a superb attack. However this time the other riders reacted and caught him after 4 laps away. There was then a sprint for the line by the remaining 12 riders in the race whereby Robert Lambton produced a fantastic sprint to take the race by over a bike length.

The B races saw three different riders take wins with Martyn Shaw of Lyme RC taking two victories and six points on the night. League leader Joe Turner of Eastlands Velo maintained his lead in the table. After a slow start he picked up a second place in the points race and win in the 10 mile event.

The C Class and ladies event of a 600m handicap saw long marker John Jackson of Macclesfield Wheelers take a great win from the closing Sarah Byrne and Mike Stubbs of Newcastle RC 2001.

The Youth field was slightly smaller than normal due to four riders going down to Newport for the following days DHL Sprint School. However the remaining 10 riders put on a fine display of riding with Alex Taylor of Sportcity Velo particularly impressive in winning the opening 400m time trail , devil and as well as being a member of the winning team sprint quartet.

The Freewheelers event saw a healthy twenty riders compete with the top points scorers in each group as follows:

Group 1 George Edwards and Joel Partington with 7 points
Group 2 Luke Mansfield with 8 points
Group 3 Georgina Clewlow with 6 points

Once the riders are adjudged to be competitant they will be passed on to the track coaches to take on to the track.

Go-Ride Activites

George Shaw

The sessions will be aimed at children who cannot yet ride the track, with mainly the under 10s targetted, but also any older riders who need some extra bike skills before riding on the track.

The Go-Ride activities will include riding around cones, under limbo bars and various other skill based routes. We feel that this will attract a number of riders who compete at the Freewheelers League

Riders will be asked to bring their own bikes which can be MTB, Road or BMX along with a suitable helmet. The cost for the session will be £2 and will start at 6.30pm lasting around 1 hour to 1 hour 30 mins
