Newcastle Track Cycling Association - Brooks Cycles Track League

Hill on Form as Track League Returns

Steve Hill

The 2008 Brooks Cycles Track League started on Thursday 1st May 2008 under fine sunny skies and although the air temperature was cold the racing on the track was hot. In the A Class League National Squad member Steven Hill showed his early season form as he won three events. His most impressive win was the final 20 lap scratch where he powered down the home straight to take the verdict from an impressive Robert Lambton.

The night also saw the first round of the Brooks Cycles H’Cap League. With 12 riders contesting the event the event sponsor Tony Brooks rode superbly to edge out another impressive youngster Kian Emadi to win from a fast finishing pack of riders.

The B Class events saw another product of the tracks youth system Declan Byrne, win all four events to already open up an impressive lead in the overall competition. His best performance came in the final A & B Class 20 lap scratch. He held on to the A class riders to finish fifth over the line and to win the B Class points. Second in the points total on the night was fellow youth rider Alex Simmons who has clearly improved greatly over the winter and seemed to be revelling in the longer events.

The C Class race was a win and event with first time rider Dave Readle justifying his long trip down from Blackburn to win from Alex Simmons and Mick Stubbs.

The Youth League was very keenly contested with a close contest developing between Sassan Emadi, Sam Birchall and Leone Davis that will no doubt go on throughout the season.

There was also a very good turnout in the ever popular Freewheelers events with 18 riders contesting the nine races on offer. The first league leaders are in Group 1 Sophie Capewell, Group 2 Sally Birchall and in Group 3 Alastair Harrison
